Gingivectomy

Surgical removal of gum tissue to restore gum health, correct excess tissue, or treat periodontal disease.

The Process

You’ll receive local anesthesia (and possibly sedation if needed) to ensure comfort. Once numb, excess or diseased gum tissue is removed using either traditional surgical tools or a laser. The gums are then reshaped, and if needed, sutures are placed. Sometimes a dressing or pack is used to protect the area while healing begins.

The Results

Post-procedure, patients generally see reduced gum inflammation, less bleeding, and improved gum contour. The treated area often becomes easier to clean, lowering the chance of recurrent gum disease. While aesthetics improve, health benefits are long term.

Care Tips After a Gingivectomy

  • Avoid disturbing the treated gums; use very gentle brushing and flossing near the site until it heals

  • Use prescribed mouth rinses or antiseptic solutions to keep area clean

  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days; avoid hard, spicy, or sharp-edged foods that may irritate tissues

  • Manage swelling with cold packs, follow medication instructions, rest properly

  • Keep follow-up visits so the dentist can monitor healing and remove dressings or sutures if present

What is Gingivectomy?

Gingivectomy is a procedure in which a dentist or periodontist removes excess or diseased gum tissue. It may be done using a scalpel or laser, depending on the situation, and often helps reshape the gums for both health and appearance.

Benefits of Gingivectomy

  • Improves ability to clean around teeth by removing overgrown or diseased gum tissue.

  • Reduces periodontal pocket depth, limiting places where harmful bacteria can hide.

  • Enhances gum health and may improve comfort, reduce bleeding, and swelling.

  • Can improve appearance when gum tissue is excessive, creating a more balanced smile.

When It’s Recommended

  • When gum disease has caused deep pockets that are not responding fully to non-surgical treatments.

  • If there is excess gum tissue obscuring parts of teeth or making cleaning difficult.

  • For cosmetic improvement in cases of a “gummy smile” or uneven gum line.
