Pit & Fissure Sealants
Protect the back teeth by sealing their grooves with durable, painless coatings to prevent decay before it starts.
The Process
We start with a thorough cleaning of the tooth. Then we isolate and dry it, often using cotton or rubber dam. The surface is prepared (etched) to help bonding. Sealant material is applied and cured (hardened) with a light if needed, or set chemically.
The Results
Sealants, when placed correctly and maintained, can last many years. They significantly reduce the development of occlusal caries in children and adolescents. Some guidelines show ~70-80% reduction in risk compared to no sealant.
Care Tips After Sealant Placement
Avoid eating sticky or very hard foods on those teeth for the first 24 hours.
Maintain good oral hygiene—sealants make cleaning easier but brushing and flossing are still required.
Regular dental checkups so we can inspect and repair any sealant that has worn away or chipped.

What are Pit & Fissure Sealants?
Sealants are thin, protective plastic or glass-ionomer coatings applied to the chewing (occlusal) surfaces of molars and premolars. They fill in the tiny grooves (pits and fissures) to block out food and bacteria.
Benefits of Pit & Fissure Sealants
Significantly reduces risk of cavities on molars, especially soon after they erupt.
Helps protect teeth that are hard to clean due to deep grooves.
Quick to apply, pain-free, and no anesthesia needed.
When It’s Recommended
As soon as permanent molars erupt (typically around age 6 and 12) in children.
In teeth with deep grooves or fissures that trap food and are at higher risk of decay.
For patients with past history of cavities, limited tooth brushing, or high sugar intake..
